इसी उद्देश्य के लिए Michael Porter ने 1979 में एक शक्तिशाली tool विकसित किया जिसे हम आज Porter's Five Forces Model के नाम से जानते हैं। यह model बताता है कि किसी भी industry की profitability और attractiveness किन पाँच मुख्य ताक़तों (forces) पर निर्भर करती है।

इन 5 forces को दो भागों में बाँटा जाता है:

1️⃣ Threat of Substitutes (स्थानापन्न उत्पादों का खतरा)
अगर आपके product का कोई आसान और सस्ता विकल्प मौजूद है, तो customer आसानी से switch कर सकता है, जिससे आपकी pricing power कम हो जाती है।
2️⃣ Threat of New Entrants (नए प्रवेशकों का खतरा)
अगर किसी industry में प्रवेश करना आसान है (low entry barriers), तो नए competitors market share छीन सकते हैं। इससे established कंपनियों का margin impact होता है।
3️⃣ Competitive Rivalry (प्रतिस्पर्धियों की तीव्रता)
Industry में जितनी ज्यादा competition होगी, उतना ज्यादा price war, advertising war और innovation pressure होगा। इससे profitability कम हो सकती है।
